Discover Noravank 13th-century Armenian monastery located in a narrow gorge made by the Amaghu River. The gorge is known for its tall, sheer, brick-red cliffs, directly across from the monastery. The monastery’s two-storey Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) church, which grants access to the second floor by way of a narrow stone-made staircase jutting out from the face of the building, is one of the earliest examples of cantilever architecture. Ancient Birds-Cave (Areni-1) is more than an extraordinary discovery. Metal knives, fruit seeds, grain residues, rope, dishes, clothing, dried grapes and plums, dated to 4200-3500 BC, were found in the cave. The oldest leather shoe in the world was also found here. It is more than 5500 years old. Also, in the same area, the world’s oldest women’s skirt (3900 BC) was found. The winery found here is considered to be the oldest one in the world and it is referred to 4th millennium BC.
